How To Care for Your Older Dog

When your dog reaches a certain age, it's time to start thinking about how you can keep them healthy, happy, and active. Annually, or more frequently, if necessary, have your pet examined by a veterinarian.

Maintain your dog's weight in the appropriate or optimum range, just like you would. Overweight dogs are more likely to develop joint disorders, arthritis, diabetes, and liver or intestinal problems. Reduce the number of snacks you give your pet. It's difficult to ignore their soulful gaze, but keep in mind that it's for their own benefit. You don't want to kill your pet by mistakenly thinking you're being kind. Feed your pet once a day or in smaller amounts twice a day, but if there is any food left over, remove it. Explain to your children why they should not feed food to your dog if you have any.

Make sure there is always fresh, chilled water available for dogs of all ages. Some senior dogs have trouble getting to the water bowl, so bring it to them or place water bowls in multiple locations so they don't have to walk far for a drink.

If at all possible, take your dog for a daily stroll. This improves the dog's blood circulation and introduces fresh sights and smells to stimulate them, as well as providing you with quality time with your pet. He may be older, but he is still fascinated.

As your dog gets older, you may need to transition from dry to moist or canned food. The hardness of dry kibbles may be too much for his teeth to bear. Taking care of your senior dog and taking him to the vet on a regular basis will help keep him healthy and happy for a longer time.
